French Bread Pizza Recipe

My grandfather used to make french bread pizza when I was little.  He would make the sauce and the bread from scratch.  I don’t have the time or energy for that.  I take all the shortcuts I can.

The sauces to choose from were a bit overwhelming so I bought four of them.  I decided that we would have a family taste test.

First, I cut the french bread in half then sliced open like a sandwich.  I painted a little olive oil on them then broiled them until toasted.

After the bread is toasted, I added the four sauces to four different pieces and covered them with cheese.  I used a Sharpie to color the top of a toothpick a different color for each.

Great Value was the green toothpick.

Once they were all cooked.  I cut each one into pieces and marked each piece with the appropriate toothpick.  Each of us tried all of the different sauces.

Our Verdict

Contadina:  Brown Toothpick

Ranked at the bottom almost across the board.  I didn’t like it at all.  Both of my sons ranked it last and felt that was an easy decision.  My husband, however, chose it as his 2nd to top choice.

Ragu: Blue Toothpick

Most of us seemed to rank Ragu as third on our list.  Isaac ranked it as the best sauce saying, “It is better than green or pink.  It is sweeter and tangier.”  I agree with the sweeter but not with the tangier.

Great Value: Green Toothpick

We were really all over the place on this one.  Zachary ranked Great Value as the best sauce.  I thought it was my second favorite.  Isaac ranked it as his third favorite.  My husband chose it as dead last and didn’t like it at all.

Prego:  Pink Toothpick

If there was a clear winner here, this would seem to be it.  My husband and I both chose it as our favorite sauce.  Both my boys chose Prego as their second favorite sauce.  Isaac said that it was both sweet and tangy.  I didn’t really taste much sweet, but I loved the tangy flavor.  Zachary also felt that it was sweet.

I can’t believe we have a consensus!

We don’t usually agree on anything!
