The shofar is unique among instruments because this horn was formed by God Himself on the head of a ram or similar animal. Our divine Creator knew long before He ever created the ram, that his horns would be a defense for the animal as well as an instrument for man.

Before the horn can sound, it must be set apart from the rest of the animal. Then it must be thoroughly cleaned out. All rotting flesh must be removed and cleaned. Every hint of death and the old life of the animal must be removed. Nothing can remain. The shofar maker is extremely thorough in the cleaning process.

Once it is completely cleaned out, the breath of the trumpeter can flow through it producing a sound that has been likened to the voice of God Himself.

In the same way, I have been cut off from my old life and set apart from my old dead man. God shows me areas inside of me where flesh and death remain, but He patiently cleanses me. He repeats the cleaning process over and over again if necessary. Then I allow His breath to flow through me trumpeting His Word to all who will hear, and it’s only then that I become an instrument in the hands of Almighty God.
